Wozniacki secures No. 1 spot by beating Schiavone

DOHA: Caroline Wozniacki secured the year-end number one spot in the world ranking on Thursday, becoming the first ever Dane to do so, but only after suffering an early fright at the WTA Tour Championships on Thursday.

For an hour, the 20-year-old top seed seemed in danger of going out of the event, until she worked out the clever tactical patterns of Francesca Schiavone, the French Open champion from Italy, and triumphed 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.

Not until midway through the second set did that happen as Wozniacki swapped containment for going on the offensive against Schiavone, who mixed topspin with slice, slow-balling with pace, and net attacks with base-lining, all with equal facility.

Twice Wozniacki's father-coach Piotr came to the courtside, where he knelt before his daughter to offer unusually animated advice.

It seemed to help, although the fourth and the fifth games of the third set were also fiercely contested and pivotal in preventing a Schiavone comeback.

"This is something I have dreamed about since I was a little girl," said Wozniacki, who will become the youngest year-end number one since Martina Hingis in 2000.

"I am really happy and proud about what I have achieved this year."

Wozniacki joined Australia's Samantha Stosur as a semifinals qualifier from the maroon group at the expense of Elena Dementieva, the Olympic champion from Russia, who will be out even if she beats Schiavone on Friday.

Asked what she might splash out on to celebrate her new status, Wozniacki said: "When I do well I like to buy a small present for myself. I usually like handbags or sunglasses - they make good accessories - but I might buy presents for all the people around me."

With her round robin wins, the Dane has done enough to prevent Vera Zvonareva, the Russian world number two, from overtaking her in the ranking.

Schiavone chiselled a break of serve in the fourth game and, Wozniacki, who unexpectedly lost the night before to Stosur, suddenly began to look anxious.

But a turning point came with a controversy in the fourth game of the second set, when Wozniacki appealed to the Hawkeye computerised replay system.

To the surprise of many she got an 'out' call on her backhand cross-court reversed - only for Schiavone to make her own, very animated appeal.

The Italian complained that the line judge's call had denied her a chance of trying to return the ball, but the umpire disagreed.

That annoyed Schiavone, firing her up to cling on to her service game for 1-3 after a long tussle. There immediately followed another lengthy struggle in which Wozniacki was made to survive two deuces before holding serve and reaching 4-1 for a stranglehold on the second set.

In the third, the Dane saved a break back point for 2-2 and followed it by winning the rally of the match, sprinting three times behind the baseline to retrieve the ball and then wowing the crowd with a counter-attacking cross-court angled drive.

"It was really difficult," admitted Wozniacki. "I just had to hang on and keep my focus, and then be a little bit more aggressive."

Kim Clijsters, playing her first tournament since the successful defence of her US Open title six weeks ago, made sure of qualifying for the semifinals with victory over Victoria Azarenka.

Clijsters overcame the world number ten from Belarus 6-4, 5-7, 6-1, guaranteeing that both she and Zvonareva, who she plays on Friday, will go through.

punemsexesena@gmail.com Reigning South Indian actress Nayantara, who was earlier planning to quit films after marrying actor-director-choreographer Prabhu Deva, is currently in trouble over her relationship with Prabhu Deva's wife Latha aka Ramalath approaching the Chennai Family Court and seeking the court's direction to restrain her husband and Nayantara from marrying each other. According to latest reports, Nayantara may continue donning the grease paint until her union with Prabhu becomes official. A close source to the actress said while the court cases surrounding Prabhu's marriage are being sorted out, she has approached promising actor Arya to consider her for a film opposite to him. (Notably, Nayantara starred opposite Arya in the super hit Boss Engira Bhaskaran). Arya has reportedly agreed to lend a helping hand to Nayan as he has a few projects lined up under his own banner The Show People. In the meantime, after almost two months, Prabhu Deva and Nayantara were recently spotted together in the city. They were rumoured to be spending time together at Mumbai or Hyderabad. Prabhu came to meet cinematographer Nirav Shah for his next project in Hindi and Nayan accompanied him here, it is said. PTI'The Chronicles of Narnia 3' to release in India Dec 10

Sushma-Modi spat rocks BJP, Gadkari meets Advani

by punem 28-10-2010-11-00-00 pmWith her statement that suggested that Modi's magic need not work in Bihar and hence he may not be required to campaign creating flutters in the party, Swaraj today sought to reach out to Modi by retracting from her statement and claiming she has been misquoted.

by punemThe Gadkari-Advani meeting in Delhi took place amidst reports that the party president had told Swaraj not to make any hurtful statements after Modi reportedly took up the issue with him.

have been misquoted (on Modi). Words have been put in my mouth," she told reporters in Patna in the midst of her election campaign.

On Monday, Swaraj told a press conference, "Modi's magic and charisma have worked in Gujarat ... but it is not necessary that everybody's magic works at every place.

"In Bihar, the magic of Nitish Kumar and Sushil Kumar Modi is at work ... and we are confident of our victory for carrying forward development," she had said.

Upset over the remarks, Modi is believed to have talked to Gadkari and complained about Swaraj's remarks against him. He reportedly told him that the statement was unnecessary.

Gadkari reportedly talked to Swaraj over the issue and urged restraint. He later went to Advani's house to discuss the issue after which Swaraj talked to reporters in Patna, claiming that neither Modi nor Gadkari were upset with her.

"I talked to Nitin Gadkari yesterday and the day before. He did not even broach the subject. He had called to ask me to attend our Foreign Cell meeting ahead of US President Barack Obama's visit. I have not had any conversation with him on this issue. He did not say a word (on it)," Swaraj said.

The Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha maintained that words were being attributed to her by some people who had "planted" this report (about Modi being upset with her) in newspapers as "they stand to gain from a fight- where there is none- between Narendrabhai and me".

Asked if these people were from BJP or outside, Swaraj said, "I can't say."

Swaraj said she and Modi shared very cordial relations and this was not liked by some people.

"Somebody is doing mischief... May be since Commonwealth Games corruption cases are being unravelled, some people want to divert attention from it by creating a controversy around BJP. My charge is that there is not even an iota of truth in this,"email- punemsexesena@gmail.com

SC paves way for judgment in 2002 Gujarat riots cases

1 Comment so far

Facebook
by punem sexsena NEW DELHI: Paving the way for the trial court to pronounce its verdict in the 2002 Gujarat riots cases , the Supreme Court on Tuesday vacated its stay order.

The apex court, however, said the trial court shall not pronounce its judgement in the case relating to the killing of former Congress MP Ehsan Jaffrey in which Chief Minister Narendra Modi has been questioned by the Special Investigation Team (SIT).

A three-judge special bench of Justices D K Jain, P Sathasivam and Aftab Alam passed the order while vacating its May 6 stay on pronouncement of judgement.

The bench said that the court can proceed with the trial in Jaffrey case as the SIT is still in the process of examining certain witnesses.

The apex court had on May 6 stayed the pronouncement of judgement in the Gujarat riots cases following allegations of botched up investigation and demand for re-constitution of SIT that had been subsequently effected pursuant to the bench's earlier direction.

Meanwhile, amicus curiae Prashant Bhushan today recused himself from the case following an application moved by the Gujarat government.

The application sought Bhushan's recusal alleging that he was biased and had strong views against the Chief Minister and the BJP government in the state.

The apex court accepted Bhushan's plea for recusal and recorded the same in an order.

The bench also issued notice to the Gujarat government on the plea for transfer of the judge dealing with the Gulberg society case relating to the killing of Ehsan Jaffrey.

It was alleged that the judge was biased, favouring the accused and humiliating the witnesses including Zakia Jaffrey, wife of the slain former MP.

The apex court had passed the stay order after allegations were made about lapses in investigations being conducted by SIT into the 2002 Gujarat communal riots cases.

The Court had then appointed A K Malhotra, a former DIG of CBI, to verify allegations of lapses in investigations by SIT in the case.

The court had passed the direction while dealing with the plea of NGO Citizen for Justice and Peace of Teesta Setalvad and some rights activists who sought a stay of the trial and sought reconstitution of SIT for its alleged bias.

The apex court has directed Malhotra to verify the allegations after examining the reply filed by SIT on the issue and submit his report.

The 10 cases being monitored by SIT on the earlier directions of the apex court are--Gulberg Society, Ode, Sardarpura, Narodao Gaon, Naroda Patya, Baranpura, Machipith, Tarsali, Pandarwada and Raghavapura

Tendulkar in ESPNcricinfo’s all-time Test World XI

1 Comment so far

Facebook
by punum sexsena New Delhi: Sachin Tendulkar was the only current cricketer named in ESPNcricinfo`s all-time Test World XI which did not include Australian captain Ricky Ponting and the likes of Brian Lara, Glenn McGrath, Sunil Gavaskar.

Tendulkar has been chosen at number four batting position along with legends like Don Bradman, Vivian Richards, Garry Sobers and Shane Warne.

Others in the World XI, dominated by Australians and West Indians, were Jack Hobbs, Len Hutton, Adam Gilchrist, Malcolm Marshall, Wasim Akram and Dennis Lillee.

Gavaskar and Lara found themselves in the second World XI along with Barry Richards, George Headley, Wally Hammond, Imran Khan, Alan Knott, Bill O`Reilly, Fred Trueman, Muttiah Muralitharan and SF Barnes.

Ponting was not in any of the two teams, the same as McGrath and India`s world Cup winning captain Kapil Dev.

The jury comprised one former captain from each of the top Test-playing teams -- Ian Chappell, Clive Lloyd, Tony Greig, Duleep Mendis, Ali Bacher, Intikhab Alam, John Wright, Ajit Wadekar -- and four cricket historians and writers.

Warne, Gilchrist and Akram were the other players from the last two decades to make it to the XI, which featured seven players who made their debuts after 1970.

Four Australians, three West Indians, two Englishmen, an Indian and a Pakistani make up the XI.

Three players were unanimous choices, figuring in the first XIs of each of the 12 members of the jury (each juror was asked to pick a first XI and a second) -- Don Bradman, Garry Sobers and Shane Warne, each of whom got the maximum points possible in the exercise, 60. Tendulkar followed with 51 points.

The biggest surprise the XI threw up was the gap between Warne and Muralitharan, the two leading wicket-takers in cricket history.

Muralitharan made it to the World Second XI, tallying 34 points fewer than Warne.

The closest battles were for one of the opening spots and for number five. Gavaskar lost out to Hobbs by one point and Headley by two to Richards.

Hutton (47 points) partners Hobbs at the top. They are followed by Bradman, Tendulkar, Richards and Sobers. While there was no competition to Sobers for the all-rounder`s spot, Imran (19) narrowly edged out Keith Miller to make it to the Second XI.

Gilchrist beat Alan Knott to the wicketkeeper`s spot by eight points. The next closest contender was Kumar Sangakkara, who got nine points.

The bowling positions were all decided by handsome margins. Three of cricket`s most highly rated fast bowlers - Dennis Lillee, leading with 48 points, Wasim Akram and Malcolm Marshall (in addition to Sobers, who could bowl left-arm fast, spin and chinamen) -- accompany Warne.email-punemsexesena@gmail.com-PTI

BCCI rubbishes talk of Raina accompanying bookie-linked womanN

1 Comment so far

Facebook
by punemsexsena: The Cricket Board on Sunday described an English newspaper report of BCCI keeping quiet on Suresh Raina accompanying a woman allegedly linked to bookies during the Sri Lankan tour as "baseless", saying that she was the agent of the Indian batsman.

A report in London Sunday Times claimed that ICC's ACSU is probing why Indian Board kept quiet about a report by Sri Lanka Cricket of Raina being seen in company of a woman linked to an associate of a bookie.

Terming the report as "baseless and false", BCCI secretary N Srinivasan said the Crcket Board has not received any such complaint from the SLC.

"The BCCI has just learnt that several media outlets are claiming that Sri Lanka Cricket had submitted a report on Suresh Raina to it, and that no action was taken by the Board on the same," he said in a statement.

"The BCCI would like to clarify that it has received no such report from SLC. The claims being made by a section of the media are totally baseless and false," he said.

BCCI spokesperson Rajiv Shukla also termed the report as "untrue" and said the woman was Raina's agent.

"That is untrue and baseless. It's all rubbish. No complaint had ever come to BCCI from either the ICC or SLC. BCCI had never received any complaint on this matter. Actually, the lady is Raina's agent," Shukla said.

"Raina was with the lady to sign some papers and complete formalities. She was also agent of some Sri Lankan players. It has nothing to do with any anti-corruption matter or any matter outside cricket," said Shukla who is also BCCI vice-president.

"It is just media speculation and nothing else," he said. According to Sunday Times, Raina on more than one night was seen in the company of a woman known to be an associate of a man allegedly linked to a bookmaker.

It said the SLC gave a report to BCCI of Raina accompanying a woman alleged to have links with a bookie along with footages of CCTV cameras installed at the Indian team hotel in Sri Lanka.

According to the newspaper report, it is the reaction of the BCCI secretary N Srinivasan that has led to the ICC investigation. Instead of acting on the report, Srinivasan is alleged to have got the Sri Lankans withdraw it.

23-year-old Raina plays for Chennai Super Kings, an IPL franchise owned by Indian Cements of which Srinivasan is a vice-chairman and managing director.

The investigation, led by ACSU head Ravi Sawani is believed to be looking into why SLC shared the report with the BCCI first when under ICC anti-corruption rules it should have gone straight to the world governing body, the newspaper said quoting unnamed ICC sources.email-punemsexesena@gmail.com
